Healthy Eating

Picture
Picture
Healthy eating habits are fostered in the daily vegan snacks the children share together. Children bring in their own lunch from home, but are served both a morning and afternoon snack. The children help make vegetarian and vegan snacks low in sugar and high in vitamins and minerals, which we call “good growing foods.” Tofu, nutritional yeast and whole grains are key ingredients in the snack recipes, and we are responsive to those with restricted diets.

Some of our favorite snacks

  • hot oatmeal with fruit, granola or applesauce
  • house-made organic applesauce with cinnamon (no sugar added)
  • soy yogurt and granola
  • rice crackers with avocado, cashew or almond butter
  • steamed broccoli and cauliflower
  • rice pasta with nutritional yeast and dulce flakes
Sugar treats are not accepted even for birthday celebrations.
A few fun and nutritious alternatives:

Fruit Cups

Fresh fruit or berries in a muffin cup. We just had raspberry fruit cups for a birthday treat and the children raved about them.

Juice Pops

All juice popsicles. These first came in for a January birthday. It was so fun to eat popsicles on a wintry day that they were brought in for the next January birthday, too.

“We chose Corner of the Sky because of the teachers and the location. The teachers are warm, caring, fun and knowledgeable about young children and their development. My daughter has a wonderful relationship with the teachers. I appreciate the fact they have such different styles that complement one another.”

“Mira has been at Corner of the Sky for more than 2 years now. She joined when she was three, and now she’s five and a half. It’s been a match made in heaven. Corner of the Sky has been a place where she feels safe, loved, celebrated, accepted, and encouraged in positive, child-friendly ways. She has really grown, and happily so, in her time there. Mira’s experience seems typical of Corner of the Sky kids—it’s simply a magical place.”

We, at Corner of the Sky, embrace a progressive philosophy rooted in the fundamental belief that play is the most significant work of young children. Children’s self-directed play and exploration of open-ended materials is a most valued component of our program. Our classroom for 3 to 6 year olds is designed to foster learning through a multitude of media; we use open-ended materials for art, science, dramatic play and interactive learning. The children are immersed in an arts-based environment, as we believe in the importance of creative expression to shape children’s learning.

Favorite Books

Picture
As a community, we are committed to an anti-bias perspective which reflects diversity; individual differences are appreciated and respected, and non-stereotypical images are evident in all our books, toys, music and other materials. Books are a large part of our curriculum. At Corner of the Sky a story can open the way for a play, an art activity or a song. We also offer all our books as a Lending Library for families to check out a favorite book and read at home.

King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub lyrics written by Audrey Wood and illustrated by Don Wood
To increase your child’s enjoyment of his/her school day, please bring:
  • a water bottle to keep at school. Please make sure the top is spill proof, and that the bottle is one your child can use unassisted. We want your child to be able to drink from his/her bottle at any time, and we will take them with us when we go for walks.
  • 2 or 3 changes of clothes, including underwear and socks. Please check these regularly to ensure they are the correct size and appropriate for the weather, and label everything with your child’s name.
  • slippers for indoor wear. Ideally, these would be the slippers with an “outdoor” tread on them to keep them from slipping.

“The teachers at Corner of the Sky have consistently impressed us with their willingness to adapt the environment of the school to the children. Flexibility of indoor and outdoor play, connecting art to everyday experiences and allowing children the time and space to express themselves. Without rushing from one activity to another are all very important parts of the school’s philosophy and to our family.”
